Western Red Cedar Fencing

custom fencing

At Extraordinaire Fence, we only use the highest-grade Western Red Cedar to ensure quality and durability. It looks nice and does not warp like other treated wood. When installing cedar, we face nail the pickets and rails to give the fence more strength and less chance of moisture sitting on the 2×4’s causing it to warp or rot. We want your fence to last as long as possible. Cedar fences can be installed with either wood or postmaster steel posts. All posts are cemented in the ground at an average depth of 30″ to prevent heaving from frost. There are many different styles to choose from. At Extraordinaire Fence Company, we understand that choosing the right fencing materials and understanding their maintenance requirements is crucial. We have compiled a list of frequently asked questions to address your concerns and provide you with the necessary information to make informed decisions. Explore the answers below to find solutions to common inquiries:

How long does a wood fence last?
15 to 30+ years depending on the quality of material being used.
Should I build with pressure treated pine or cedar?

We do not recommend using pressure treated pine. Pine is a softwood that can be prone to moisture damage, including rot and warping. We only use Western Red Cedar as it is resistant to rot and decay, weather resistant and low maintenance.

Do I need to stain or paint my new wooden fence?
With the Western Red Cedar that we use, you do not need to stain. You can if you want to, but do not need to. If you choose to stain, we recommend contacting a local paint company to get the best quality stain to use.
What causes wood fences to shrink, warp, and twist?
All wood will typically shrink due to being wet when installed. Warping and twisting is due to the quality of the materials being installed. That is why we only install Western Red Cedar because it’s the best wood for outdoor applications.
Does wood change color over time?
Yes, the Western Red Cedar we use will turn a grayish color over time. If you power wash it, it will return to it’s natural color again, but over time, it will return to the grayish color.
Will gaps develop between pickets and boards of wooden fences?
Yes as the pickets dry out, they will shrink causing minor small gaps.
Are wood fences hard to maintain?
If you install them with quality material such as Western Red Cedar, it reduces the required maintenance to low. An example to help with maintenance, would be using postmaster steel posts verses standard wood posts.
What are the advantages of a wood fence?
You get solid privacy. You don’t have to worry about rocks or balls blowing holes through the pickets like you may have with Vinyl Fencing.
